Question about max revolution

I have trans-am 91 with 5.0 lb9 engine and 5 speed transmission with 3.08 gear. The red line for the engine is 5000 rpm!! Is it enought? Can i shift at 5500 or this will be cause damage to the engine?

you should shift when the engine quits making power, or before valve float occurs.

If it's all stock, there isn't much point in taking it much over 5000.

never saw a stock 305 make it past 5000rpm without having an asthma attack!

Transmission: 6-speed
Does a ported plenum count as a mod? I did that and my 305 TPI pulls really strong all the way upto 5500 rpm, although I usually shift at 5100 rpm. Before the plenum mod, 4500rpm was about the limit before it ran out of breath.
