what size cam should I use for my 90 305

I have a 90 rs 305. It just blew a head gasket so I figured that I would do some upgrades to it. I am going to have the stock heads rebuilt and was wondering what the max cam I can have on the stock heads? Also I have a set of 333882 heads off of a 350 that I bought.....that is ending up being made into a coffee table. Could I use those heads on my 305? Really don't have a ton of money to get heads. But I am going to put a new intake swap the tbi for carb and I would like to do a cam as well.
Thanks for the input

Do nothing. The stock 305/350 heads on these cars flow poorly compared to anything aftermarket that its not worth putting money into them unless your goal is simply to return to stock.

The valve job will help a little. But you are very limited on camshaft choices due to the poor flow of the heads. The most popular cam swaps are the L98/LT1 cams.

Those 882 heads will mess with your compression

Re: what size cam should I use for my 90 305

Stick with the 305 heads on a 305. 350 heads have larger combustion chambers which will lower your compression too much.

Also, the TBI computer is very sensitive to mods, so stick with a smaller camshaft. The stock L98 or LT1 camshaft with its 203/207 duration is perfectly fine and will really wake up the TBI engine while remaining computer friendly.

Ok cool. I was also thinking of getting rid of the tbi and going carb as well.

Re: what size cam should I use for my 90 305

I haven't had a chance to test it out yet because my engine is still out of the car, however fast355 has had good results and recommended the Elgin 1136 camshaft for my 305.

It's what I bought for my 1991 305 tbi. I believe you will want or need to do some tuning if you stick with the TBI unit though.

Yeah I just figured that if I have it half torn apart that I might as well upgrade it until u get another 350. The first one I got had some cracks in the lifter valley...needless to say I am now making that into a coffee table

I think you will really like that cam. The stock heads are not the restriction some claim and work very well with the right modifications and a small cam.

I'm pretty excited for it, I just have to finishing installing my transmission and adjust my valves after the motors fires up (hopefully it does)! MY old cam was worn out too so even a new cam would have probably made a better ride for me. I got the intake runners ported to my gaskets and the exhaust runners slightly opened with bigger valves with a valve job on the heads. Then I slightly cleaned up the ports on the edlebrock intake I got and did the ultimate TBI thing (minus grinding down the throttle shaft) to my TBI unit.

I'm a little nervous about the tuning though. I don't really know what I should change and don't have much experience. I do have the EBL flash though, and looked up and copied the EBL utility values for the BPC and BST tables based on my bigger injectors (which are 5.7 injectors so I think they are 65lb, and I'm hoping my fuel pressure is set to around 14).

However, asides from the automatic VE learns, I don't know what else I'll need to change. I wouldn't know what to look for when it comes to spark and all that jazz. Hopefully the VE learns will get rid of most of the tuning for me!

I wish that injector information would die on those flow rate gueses from old days. The 350 injectors at 12 psi are 61 lb/hr.

You will want to find the VE table for a midly cammed engine and copy it in. RBobs LG4 would be where I started my fuel tables from. IIRC he mentioned it had a small rv cam and 350 injectors.

I can help with a startup EBL tune if you need. Just need the latest startup .BIN he includes for a base. All my EBL stuff is many years old.
