Re-installing Dist, but I don't remember how Dist. was alligned
I was replacing my intake manifold gasket on mt '86 TA 305 TPI, and I did not mark the distributor when I pulled it out.
I do remember how the base of the distibutor was setting, but I'm
not sure about the rotor? It was either pointing at the #6 wire, or the #1 wire. I think it was pointing at the #6 wire, so I'm goona try it and hope it works. Also I have not cranked the engine since I pulled it out.
Does any one have any advice on what to do at this point, other than just trying it?

DO NOT "just try it". That's the Ford way.
You need to find TDC on #1 by putting your finger of the spark plug hole and have someone tap the starter until you feel pressure.
Once you do, rotate the crank until the timing tab and balancer are at 0*. That will put the #1 piston at TDC.
After you get that, just point the rotor toward the #1 piston, making sure the oil pump drive shaft is lined up with the notch on the bottom of the dist.
Keep the hold down bolt just snug enough so you can rotate the dist a little as the engine first fires up to keep the car running, but not loose enough for it to move on it's own.
