496 anyone?

Currently debating the merits of stroking my truck engine (does haul my thirg gen on occasion so okay to discuss) to a 496. This combo is a .060 overbored and 1/4 stroked 454. It will be a markIV, mild cammed, TBI engine.
Wondering about clearance issues with Scat 9000 series crank, stock length rods, and Keith Black pistons---mainly piston to crank? I am guessing 550ft lbs torque out of this with peanut port heads and mild cam--What do you think? Hemi tow truck eater??

People do it all the time. Nothing particularly unusual or earth-shattering about building a stroker out of the cheapest such parts available, except for how bad you want to nut it into a tractor motor. Most people use something decent for an induction system when going to all the expense of stroking a big block; the combo you have there would be about like buying a Porsche and putting a set of the cheapest non-radial P205/75-14 tires on it you could find. Kind of pointless, yet amusing in an economically suicidal way.

See www.chevelles.com for some big block tech, and some ideas from people who do this stuff on a regular basis, to see how it's really done. I guarantee you nobody over there is running peanut-port garbage on any motor if they can help it, least of all a larger-than-stock one, myself included.

I have other heads at my disposal including some 049's but won't waste them on this project. The peanut ports I know for any race horsepower game are junk. I have thrown at least two sets in the scrap pile over the years. One of my main reasons for doing this is the price for these parts(new) is only a little more than rebuilding my old stuff. No none of it is top shelf forged race car stuff---I have that stuff and it has a place.
I haven't seen this subject discussed on this board and am rather surprised. Tractors--I have 6 of those--ya they have their place!

The problem with those heads on a large inch engine, is that they'll limit your upper RPM usable range to next to nothing. You'll have one of those trucks that can pull stumps if it can get traction, but won't be able to pull out and pass a semi, or merge on a short on-ramp, or to go up a hill at highway speeds, etc. A tractor has a place, sure; but it isn't pulling a heavy trailer on a busy highway.

You'd do alot better with a set of normal oval-port heads like 781s or 820s, and pistons to produce a CR in the mid-high 9s, and a cam with around 225° of intake duration.

One of the best all-around street cams for big block used to be the HE268 from Comp. Some of the newer marine cams would work well for that purpose too.

Thanks for the imput RB83L69. I may use a set of 063's (68-69 396-427)heads that have nice ports and closed chambers. I haven't done the math yet but they have around 100cc chambers and that may give more comp than I can live with. The 454's in these rigs were under 8 to 1 and with poor gas and a heavy load I don't want to get over around 9 to 1. The event that brought about my engine change/rebuild was a jumped timming chain---It caused bent intake push rods and two bent valves. The old 454 had good power but was high miles. The peanut heads on it did support enough flow to bury the 80mph speedometer nicely on the interstate. If I ever purchase another high milage big block I will change the chain and gears right away! The motor I am replacing is a four bolt(actually can see the front main form the timming chain cover) main block which will see a lot of different quality parts and some real compression in its next life. It may find a new home in the camaro!
Thanks for the link-lots of good info,
Jack
