Help with Daily Driver...Engine ticking
I have a 95 Dodge Avenger with a 2.5L V6. At startup it sounds fine. After idling for 2-5 mins it begins to tick. It sounds like a lifter but it is overhead cam anddoesn't have lifters. Any ideas?? It goes away after the motor reaches 2000 RPMs or so. The severity of the tick lessened when I ran 89 octane gas in it. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Lars

Is it a valve type tick or internal engine noise? BTW ohc engines can still use lifters

they still had hydraulic lifters in that engine. don't think high octane gas would affect a lifter though. what weight oil is in it? does it change under load? sounds like it has an exhaust leak maybe? at the manifold or crossover pipe

Sorry I am mistaken about the lifters, I thought it had cam followers. Any way. I thnk it has 10W30 or 5W30 synthetic (Quaker state). I'm not sure my other daily driver took a really big dump so I'm borrowing mom's other car. It is definately a Valve train tick, no doubt about that.
It goes away when the RPMs are above 2000. It doesn't matter if it is under load or not the tick goes away above 2000 RPMs. And it's definately not an exhaust leak. This is a real high pitched almost metal on metal tick.
I was just wondering if anyone had ny kind of experience with Mopar.
Thanks,
Lars

im not sure what it is, but my sister has the exact same car you described, and it makes the exact same noise, We've been trying to find it for about a year, but no one seems to know anything about it- including our Dodge dealer, go figure...
