What is this part?
What is this part?
Got a call today from a nice lady in Iowa who is in the process of having her car repaired after it was stolen. She has a 89 Camaro RS with a V6, but on the console there was an little lever about and inch long that was some kind of traction control switch.
Does anyone know what this is. The Chevrolet Dealer in her town said it wasn't a factory item. Since I'm in the dark on 3rd Gens, I need your help.
Thanks,

What happens when this switch is thrown? Thirdgens never came with any type of traction control. How could she not know what the switch was? It is her car. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

As 82z said.. Thirdgens never came with any type of traction control so it's not going to be that.
The only way to find out what it is will be to trace where any wires/cables go to. She probably got the car sencond hand and the first owner had something hooked up to it at one time that's not in the car anymore.
Oh and 82z... why is that the most ridiculous thing you have ever heard? some people don't know anything about cars believe it or not, people like nice ladies from Iowa for one.

I didn't say she didn't know what it was. As explained to me, this switch when used, control the rear end traction when in a slide or loss of rear wheel traction. What I am trying to find out is, was this some kind of aftermarket add on or was it some kind of traction control installed by Chevrolet. She is not the original owner of the car. When the car was stolen this item was distroyed in the vandalism. I am just trying to find out what it is or was.
Thanks,
Doug

If it looks like a little rocker switch in the center of the lower part of the console just rearward of the shifter cutout, with 2 wires (orange & brown I think ) going to it, it's the rear hatch release.
Like the other posts have said, there was never any sort of traction control on any of these cars; one look underneath the car should easily verify that. It's conceivable that sonbody could have put one of those air lockers in its rear end; if so, there will be an air line going ot the housing, and an air compressor somewhere. That would be highly unlikely.

Could it be some kind of a switch for an aftermarket overdrive? That's weird.
