accelerator pump?

I think my accelerator pump is going bad and I'd like to replace it if its not to hard. Is it very hard and what steps should I take in doing this? My car is a 1986 pontiac ta carbuerated quadrajet and I've heard the accelerator pumps go hard and cause bad acceleration every once in a while. thanks for any comments or suggestions.

Is it shooting any fuel into the primaries when you move the throttle?

And to answer if its hard to change... Yea, its really kind of a pain. Have to take the top of the carb off, and thats no fun.
Check what jmd said.

that fault would be responsible for most of the slang terms for quads:
quadra-bog
quadra-dog
quadra-junk
etc...

a bad acellerator pump will have the 'bog' symptoms when opening the throttle quickly. If you look into the carb to view the pump-squirt operation, do not have the engine running as it could backfire (murphys law).
A bad acellerator pump will still shoot some fuel into the carb... just not enough. It would have to be broken or totally clogged to produce no fuel squirt at all.

quads are not my thing. Hopefully a quad expert will see this and help you out.
good luck

yeah its shooting fuel but could it not sometimes? as it pauses sometimes? I've heard it could be going bad and you always don't get the fuel pressure you need. Anyways thanks.

Cool car for being my first and spending $1000 at an impound auction. Had to start it with a screw driver for a bit but it's all gravy.

TA,

Have you checked the adjustment of the enrichment solenoid lately? How about the TPS voltage? If you get that far, it's a lot like changing the accellerator pump cup and spring - but not QUITE as bad. How about the power valve seal on the underside of the carb body?
