Cheap and/or easy mods for a 305??
anyone have suggestions as to cheap mods or mods i can do myself to give my 305 some more hp. i already have k&n filter & dual borla 3" exhaust from the cats back. also, i am thinking of puttin chevy bowtie exhaust tips on. would these hinder the exhaust flow since the tailpipe wouldn't be 3" anymore w/those on?

The tips wouldn't really hinder performance but they won't help it either. What 305 do you have? Is it carbureted or fi? Exhaust is a great start, esp with borla. There are NO cheap mods to "give" the engine more horsepower, all you can hope to do is free up what GM left for you. We really need to know whether it's fi or carb, because after exhaust the next step is the intake side. If it's tune-up time, get aftermarket (accel, msd) cap&rotor and some good plug wires. You could gut those cats as long as you don't tell Al Gore because then you'd be destroying the environment he invented with the internal combustion engine he invented. Check out the tech articles or some signatures of members of this site. Good Luck.

uhh, Timing Advance, if it's TPI, throttle body bypass, lighten up the car, need more info on your car to further this.

you could make a home made ram air setup and get some K&N air filters - the car will pull harder at high rpms
------------------
91 z28 lb9 5 speed - hooker 1 5/8 headers - high flow cat- full 3 inch exhaust - home made ram air - tpis airfoil - dual chamber flowmaster - Stage 2 Jet Chip and 160 stat - 8 mm Msd plug wires - 55,000 v hypertech coil/rotor/distrib. cap - Mac. White face gauges - lots of sound system crap...

Forget ram air...make a "GM Tech" style cold air setup. If you can have the car down for a few days, fully port/polish the plenum, runners, and base unless you don't want to pull the base. Gut the maf, have the tb brake honed to just under 52mm and make custom aluminum plates for it. Switch to synthetics all around, and try to cut some weight: padding under the carpet, alum. driveshaft, seatbacks, etc. How nuts you want to get with that is up to you. Make sure your brake calipers are nice and lubed up, good tire pressure (and tires by the way) . I'm in the process of using what were the transmission cooling tubes on my radiator for oil cooling since I have a separate trans cooler. Hope all that helps. Oh, and you can see Vader's article on making a homeade afpr but then you have to buy a guage - someone posted that a cheapie guage from Lowe's will work.
