Valve Spring Height Confirmation.....

OK...recommended valve spring height is 1.75 inches.

I measured from the bottom of the spring to the bottom of the retainer and have 1.81 inches. So I need a .03 inch shim right??

Your help is greatly valued.

Thanks

The springs you PM'd me about are supposed to be setup at 1.780" according to TFS Technical information.

1.470 in. Springs
1.470 in. O.D. single with damper
120 lbs. at 1.780 in. installed height
300 lbs. at 1.280 in.
360 lbs. per inch spring rate
.540 in. max valve lift

Sound like you're going to need another .030 shim under the springs, if you go with 1.780". Or, .060 if you set them up at 1.750". Those shims come in .015, .030 and .060 I believe.

You are putting enough tension on the locks to make sure they're seated good, right?

Hope it all works out for you. Been through this twice myself with those heads. Lucky I had a automotive machine shop 100' from where I was working on it. They had the correct shims and valve retainer locks to get my height right and the shop I was working in had the height guage and spring tension tester.

Also, FYI, I had my valve covers off today. The reason I used shims in the center four holes was because the spring seats are not machined large enough diameter to use the cups supplied by TFS. The other 12 spring seats were, but not the center four.

But, everything looked good in there! I also changed to 7/16 studs and Comp Cams 1.6 Pro Magnum rockers when I did my valve train last year.

Thanks smasterson, I do need the .06" shims. Called Trick Flow today about the shims. I spent all day yesterday, Sunday, trying to find some locally. Charlie at Trick Flow had this response when I asked him why they weren't sent with all the other parts, " Ooops!". That's a $150.00 oops as I had to rent another car for the week as I won't be able to work on this until next weekend.

Artie at Trick Flow hasn't returned my 2 e-mails from Friday.
