Dude,

It depends upon how much of the system you want to remove. If you want to remove all the unnecessary parts, you'll need a HVAC cover from a B4C or other non-air conditioned ThirdGen. If you only want to remove the compressor and plumbing, there is a bit less work.

Technically, the first thing you should do is to have the system evacuated by a certified refrigeration technician. Then you can legally open the system and start disassembly. Remove the compressor, receiver, condenser, line sets, and compressor wiring. The ECM doesn't care if the air conditioner is connected or not, but the idle speed will try to increase a bit when you first turn the controls to defrost or any AC range.

If you are removing all of the AC components and replaceing the outer duct cover, you can also remove the evaporator and fan cabinet. Install and rewire the heat-only fan in the replacement duct cover. Most of the connectors should reach the necessary locations, and directly plug into the blower, relay, and blower resistor.

Would it be too hard to repair the system, or do you need the extra space?

Actually removing the compressor is MORE work because of the serpentine setup. If your handy with tools and have grinders, ect. here we go.

Rip out the evaporator, blower motor box, accumulator, lines, condenser in front of the radiator, and the compressor. It's straight-forward so no need to get into depth.

Get a blower motor box from a non a/c cam/fbd (more common in the earlier years and they are made of metal) You will not need the blower motor if yours is good, but you WILL need the squirrel cage since the non a/c is less deep. You will have to grind out the rectagular opening in the non ac box to the triangular shape of the a/c type blower resistor pack then it will bolt right in and look perfectly stock!

Now for the compressor I found the easiest way is to get an idler pulley from a 2.8l cam/fbd with serpentine, unbolt it from the bracket and mount it to a plate (I used an alternator bracket from a 85 monte and drilled it) Just need something to mount between the two bolts in the compressor housing with a hole in the middle to mount the idler pulley. Now is a good time to ditch the smog pump too. Take out the aluminum bracket that mounts the compressor and smog and trim the excess off it to make it look presentable w/o the compresor in there. Use washers or better yet a bushing (cut pipe) to space the idler correctly. Use the "new" belt routing (without smog) and run strong twine through your routing and knot it tightly while someone holds your tensioner at the "new belt" mark. Without releasing tension (Which will stretch the twine right out) slip it off, take it to a parts store and get a six rib belt that matches your twine template. It might take two tries, but when you get the right size make sure to write down your belt lenghth somewhere. Slap it on, enjoy many #'s off your front end and an uncluttered look. If you take your time and paint your parts up and do a good job smoothing the compressor housing (be careful not to break it) it will look like stock. The hardest part is fabbin' that bracket or plate to go accross the housing and finding the right lenghth bolt for the pulley (The 2.8 one will be too short)

They probably have an aftermarket idler somewhere, but this can be had for junkyard dirt. It just takes some time.
