Fan problems/ not working

I have 1992 chevy camaro 305 tbi and a 5 speed. It only has one electric fan and has ac. My pronblem is that the fan will not come on unless the ac is turned on. I just replaced the coolent temp. switch that is up by the water neck and this did not help at all. I can straight wire the fan and it runs fine. Could it be the fan relays, where are they and how can I check them? Can someone please help me fix this problem before I burn up the engine.

I will tell you what Tim Burgess told me in the electrical forum. I'm not sure of the location but on my 89 RS the fan relay is located to the right of the power brake booster. It has four wires going to it. Disconnect the relay and with the ignition off the brown/white wire should not have power going to it, if it does you have a bad ignition switch. If it does not chances are it is your fan relay. That was my problem. The new relay is around $8 at most auto parts stores. If this doesn't help refer to the Electrical forum, subject "I know your tired of hearing about thiss--FAN". Between this post and the ones under that post you should be able to solve your problem.

The coolant temp sensor you changed in the water neck area is the temp information sensor for the computer. The temp sensor that controls the fan is on the passenger side cylinder head. Your situation sounds like this may be the problem. If it comes on with the ac, the relay is probably ok. I would check the temp sensor on the cylinder head first. Also check the wire that comes off of it, it is close to the exhaust manifold and could be damaged. Hope this helps

A quick way to check it is to pull the wire off the temp sensor on the head, turn the ignition to the on position then ground the wire( stay clear of the fan) it should come on, if it does its your sensor, if it doesnt it could be a break in the wire somewhere or possibly the relay at that point

I know that this is a stupid question but where exactly is the coolent temp. sensor on the passenger side head.

Its between the last 2 cylinders, just below the exhaust manifold. Its real close to the dipstick tube.
