Need Wisdom From the Camaro Wise Guys!!!!

When it boils down to it, I'm looking for the same answer to the impossible question as many other people......cam selection, which one...which brand......which rocker arms???

I've got an L69, plan on buying the Weiland Stealth dual plane high rise intake, stock heads........(don't want to waist BIG money on the 305, my crazy 8 ***** says 383).......Hooker competition headers, non-cc 650 Q Jet, 5 speed tranny, and NO COMPUTER JUNK>>>>hei vaccum advance dist.

I was thinking of perhaps a Comp Cam with the 440 and 440 I think it had 212 duration on both....don't remember exactly.

I'll use this car as a daily driver, but don't have to drive far to work, 2 miles.......and maybe a few errands....lots of freeway......lopey idle desirable, but don't know how much lift is too much for my stock heads.

Please help with your suggestions, what's worked and what hasn't...

Thanks again,

I'd suggest a Comp XE262H, and their 1416 rocker arms if you change the valve springs (981) at the same time.

I tend to like cams in the 280+ duration (Advertised) with about 110* to 112* lobe centerline. You'll get some good power and the lopey idle your looking for.

Why don't you want to spend alot of money on the heads? You can aquire some decent heads for a 350, do whatever you want, and then the can be fitted to the 305 untill you get the 383 shortblock ready to go.

I had that cam in my car before, its 212/212 .444/.444. Its the same specs as the cam in a f*rd 302 with the roller cam. Honestly, I think the 212/218 cam would have been better.
RB also has a good choice, as usual.

I pretty much don't want to spend the money on heads for my 305 because I'll end up spending it again when I build my 383. Depending on how much it costs, I may end having the stock heads ported and polished??? Besides that, I am fairly satisfied with the stock performance of my L69. It's only rated at just under 200hp, but it's got a lot more punch than a lot of 70's muscle cars with horse power ratings in the low 300's range...at least that's my take on it.

Anyhow, how much lift is acceptable for my stock heads?

I'll answer your last question first. As to lift, i've seen a stock L69 take .480" w/ stock springs no less. Not a good idea, but it did run.
As for what cam...your best all around performer with stock heads would probably be what RB suggested. I don't know if you'll get a lope from it though. You might need to step up to a 268 or even a little further before that really sets in. The aforementioned L69 in a monte SS sounded absolutely evil with a comp 280, but was way overkill. It was faster than stock, but definitely non ideal. Still, if it's not your only mode of transport and you want to make your 305 sound like a beast, thats the cam you want. It pulled 12" of vacuum (enough for power brakes) in the monte, and that was with the stock computer running it.
