mechanical fuel pump question...

there's a metal plate sandwiched between the engine block and the fuel pump, it's as thick as the block off plate of electric fuel pump equipped cars... i lost mine, and a friend told me it isn't really necessary, and that it's ok to install the fuel pump without it... is this true?

your friend's on crack. you need the plate to keep the oil inside the engine, it'll never work without it, the fuel pump won't cover the opening in the block.

Nah... I think his friend is low.

It doesn't matter what his friend is though, you have to have the plate. There will be a HUGE gap there pouring oil out without it.

it's an old style gm fuel pump... aside from the oil prob will there be a clearance problem? i'm not entirely sure, but i think there wouldn't be a gap coz i remember prying the plate off of the fuel pump, and it matched the fuel pump surface perfectly, i could be wrong though, tnx

Don't bother trying to outsmart yourself. You have to have the plate, period. It is nothing like the same footprint as the fuel pump; it's about twice as tall, and it's wider than the widest part of the fuel pump for most of its height.
