NOx levels high

I had my new 86 TA emission tested and it had high NOx levels. I've heard running to lean will cause high NOx. Anything else that might be causing it? If the car had an aftermarket open element air cleaner on it, would it help if i through a more restrictive stock air cleaner back on it?

Thanks

Yes. Lean running, lack of EGR, and detonation caused by carbon buildup causing hotspots in the cumbustion chambers. Try running some water through the carb. Check your EGR (You might be able to push up from underneath {Unless TPI}) and make sure vacuum lines are hooked up. Otherwise it's a fueling prob.
