sputtering every now and then

every now and then (once a month or so) ill shut off my 87bird (305 tbi) and she'll just keep sputtering for a minute. why the hell does this happen?

I've seen bad gas do that too.

My dad use to have an old 83 fullsize chevy that if filled with 87 octane, it would diesel for about 5-6 seconds. I think it was a combo of octane and timing. I always gave him hell for it

Axle/Gears: stock pegleg 2.73 drum (temp)
this is called dieseling. it happens when the fuel still in the manifold hits hotspots on the head/piston. you can usually cure it by using a higher octane. I'd suggest running a carb/FI cleaner addative in your tank to see if that helps too
