intermitent sputtering in idle...wtf?

what could it be? the car runs fine...starts easily and idles ok, except for the occasional sputter at the exhaust... it occurs in regular intervals, like every 2-3 seconds at arnd 500 rpm... the tach also fluctuates with the sputtering...wtf?

Need more detail. Sounds like the air/fuel mix is off.

What kind of carb?

If it's a Q-Jet, it might be the plugs in the bottom of the fuel bowl under the primary jets leaking gas into the intake like they always do.

Locry,

What is your cam profile? A stock cam should allow a fairly smooth idle, but more overlap will definitely cause some lope and unsteady idle.

Where is the base timing? Any other symptoms, like smoke, overheating, etc?
