cleaning the k&n without the kit
alright...i'm hoping this doesn't get locked, as it's not directly related to a 3rd gen...
i have a carb/TBI type K&n filter for my 1985 350 suburban that is in dire need of a cleaning. i'm cheap and don't really want to fork out $15 for a kit. i've heard that with some gasoline and oil, you can clean it effectively yourself. the procedure would be to soak in gasoline to clean it, then use water to rinse off the gas (by running the water in the opposite direction of the airflow), and then to coat with some oil to finish it off.
now of course, if this ruins the filter, then it's obviously more intelligent to just fork out $15.
but, if this works, i'd rather do that and save the $15 for gas (well, the gas that i'm NOT cleaning the filter with,
).
so...does this sound like it would work fine?
and if so, do i need to buy the special oil, or would just some motor oil work alright?
yes, this is a dumb question, but i'm curious.

Im not sure if gasoline will clean it well enough or not. I do know that the oil in the kit is the oil you need to use. Motor oil is thicker and will restrict the air and probably collect dirt.
