Can a ZZ4 short block be used to replace an L98?
Just wondering if I could use a ZZ4 short block to replace an L98 with TPI?
Will all of the accessories brackets be able to bolt right on for the TPI also?
Not sure if there were any "gotchas" like with the LT1.
Thanks

From what I have heard the ZZ4 is awesome with TPI. It bolts right up. You should get a custom prom though and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator to tune it in.

The only 'gotcha' is the EGR wont function anymore. Theres no heat riser passages so it doesnt do what its supposed to... no exhaust gases. The way around it if you have to is to port some exhaust from the RH manifold/header into a corvette base or aftermarket base.

Hey madmax, you may have noticed from my other post in TPI about the intake fitting on the Sportsman 200 heads. I'm planning on putting these heads on the ZZ4 short block and drilling out the intake if it can be done to fit the heads.
Those heads have a 2 inch or so deep port in them for the EGR, they just don't go all the way thru to the exhaust ports. Its my understanding that they can be milled out to the exhaust port for the EGR, so if I must have the EGR, I'll try that, if not, then I may go without it. Currently NO2 is not checked for during emissions testing here.
Thanks

Does the short block come with the heads? I had to drill an accessory hole when I put on the ZZ4 heads to bolt everything back up. And I did the thing madmax talked about with the EGR port and a TPIS intake manifold. I'll have pics up this weekend as I install the engine.

Here is a ZZ4 short block (turned upside down)...
Note that there's no heads, cam, timing chain, ect., ect. It's pretty much just the block and the rotating assembly.

Thanks, looks like that the way I'm trying to go since my massive detonation problem has killed my motor, just don't think the TPI was meant to be bolted right on with a TBI heads/cam...

I dunno what your detonation problem is coming from, but my dad did a TPI conversion on his 92 RS TBI and its running great, even on 87 octane....

Don't forget you have to change the valve springs for that much lift.

I was using the stock TBI cam, same lift as before.

Kevin, not sure either what the cause is, its been down 2 months, redone everything from harness to programming, still does it. I've seen hundreds of F-bodies do this swap with hardly any probs. But this is on a '94 Silverado, I found another guy that did it, had same problem and burned a piston, maybe the truck TBI cam profile is too different than the f-bods cam, don't know, except that I'm changing it now...
Thanks

That much lift meaning if you were using the ZZ4 cam.
Maybe you've got carbon buildup somewhere? I wasnt following your detonation thread so I dont know what you did.

Ahh I see, do I need to change the springs in the Sportsman 200 heads for the ZZ4 cam?
Not sure what is on them, but they have never been used, 1.60/2.02 valves are on them.

As far as the detonation prob, I've done everything from timing changes all over, 101 race gas, opening EGR fully, fp all over, colder plugs, no change no matter what I did, oh, and flushed the engine with top eng cleaner several times, dropped the exhaust in case it was plugged....

The manual for the Sportsman heads should tell you what the max lift cam you can use with them will be.
When you changed to TPI, did you change the knock sensor too? Did you get the one for the correct size engine you have?

Yep, I changed it, but its not false knock, its so bad sometimes I can hear it ping. Not running lean either, O2s at WOT are in the .900's and have had the fp from 35-58# with line off, and no change.
should bolt right up nothing like a lt1! its trditional small block!
