89 GTA Ram Air
Has anyone tried building a ram air system through the two vents on the stock GTA hood?
I am interested in trying this, but wondering if it is possible keeping the MAF system. Seems it could be done fairly easily with density fuel injection.
Any thoughts?

I've pondered this idea too. My only real concern would be the aerodynamics of our cars. I fear the air would just skim over, and not be forced in. I'm no engineer, but thats what has been holding me back. Anyone else know if it would work or not?

It would not be a high pressure area but it would be a very good cold air source.

The screens in the front vents really dont provide all that much surface area if you were to take the massive amount of surface area away that is taken up by the screens. If they were removed completely that would be better, but I havent looked into if that would work ok or not. Theres a few other problems. You have an 89, so unless you changed the ECM, it still has a MAF sensor. This creates a problem in itself, theres really no space to put it into the intake between the bellows and where an airbox would have to be. You would have to cut the backside of the hood, and seal it with some weatherstripping. There isnt much clearance, but I figure I can gain some cross-sectional area over the stock airbox mailslot. Another problem is water, when it rains you have to make sure it doesnt just all run into your engine.
The worst part of this idea is the vents, the screens are mostly metal and very small holes, and the plastic part of the vents dont really have that much area that they can take air in. Its something that could be done, but theres alot you should account for and I am not sure how much effect, if any, that it would have.

I did this to my 88 TA. But I've got a TBI so it may be a tad different - check it out at my site... Under "The Exterior -> Original Hood/Ram Air Project"...
