Anyone ever had torque wrench calibrated?

Just wondering where a fellow can get this done or if it is even possible. I have a 1/2 Craftsman click style wrench that is 7 years old now. I am starting to question how accurate it still is.

Since it's Craftsman I think you just take it to a Sears nearby. There's about a 99% chance it's NOT accurate so they either have to calibrate it or give you a new one (what they usually do) b/c of the "lifetime guarantee". Fun times...

Base: 89 Iroc-Z LB9 auto 2.73 posi
Exh: 3" Dynomax muffler, 3" Pipe in place of cat
Ign: GMPP 8MM wires, Accel cap&rotor, AC Plugs
Fuel: Cleaned and flow-matched injectors, afpr, !air pump&diverter valve
Sound: Clarion deck, Kicker speakers and amps
Suspension/Drivetrain: KYB Shocks, TPIS Struts, BMR Strut Tower Brace
Misc: TB Bypass, All synthetics, Flexlite Transmission cooler
On the way: homemade 51.5mm tb and ported intake parts,
3-4 upshift valve, acc. spring, etc.

take it to sears and they can get it done, but it may be cheaper to just replace it

There is no lifetime warrenty on Craftsman torque wrenches. they will cal. or repair them for a charge though.

I work in the Tool Crib at my squadron(410 Sqn - 4 Wing), and on average I test about 30 torque wrenches per month(mostly Snap On's). Some of these torque wrenches have been in continuous use for nearly 20 years(since June 1982), and yet it is rare to see one that is out of calibration by more than 5 - 8%. I would check with local machine shop's to see where they get their wrenches tested.

On most click-type wrenches, the torque is set by compressing an internal spring. This is the part most likely to wear-out. If your wrench fails it's test, ask Sear's if they have a rebuild kit for your model. You will likely only need to replace this spring.

The best way to ensure your torque wrench lives a long, useful life -and I can't stress this enough- never stretch the spring by bottoming-out the adjustment ring. When the torque wrench is not in use, it should be put at it's lowest scale reading. For instance if you have a 40 - 100 in/lb wrench, set the wrench to 40 in/lb when you are done(no lower, no higher).

Like any good tool, a torque wrench will last forever if you take care of it.

You get the torque wrenches' calibration tested at the same place that calibrates your mics, calipers, dial gauges, and indicators. Look in your local yellow pages for a NIST accredited calibration service. Look under the "Gauges" or "Metrology" heading. I live in a weenie little town and there are seven of them here.

It's about six bucks to calibrate a micrometer-style torque wrench if it doesn't need a new spring or detent mechanism. It doesn't matter if it's a Snap-On, Craftsman, Armstrong, Wright, Proto, Blake, or whatever. If you want to pay more, you can hand it to the Snap-On dude so he can charge you more to drop it off there for you....
