Vortec Head question.

I have a 1970 something SBC 350 block that I had bored 0.03 over to make it a 355, I have flat hyperutectic (sp?) pistons, forged crank. Edlebrock air-gap intake, and a holly 750 double pumper.. i need heads and a cam basically to finish my 2.8 -> 5.7 swap. I was given the advice to get vortec heads as the most bang for my buck, are vortec heads "good" as opposed to lets say some camel humps that have been ported and had the valves at 2.02 and 1.6? TIA

If you have emissions visual inspection, you're on the wrong track. Vortecs are just one part of that violation.

Vortec heads flow pretty well and have a nice combustion chamber shape. However, for performance applications, they have some limitations. First is valve springs - the supplied stock springs are terrible, change them. Second is valve lift - you have to keep it below about .450" (there are variations, some more, some less), or else have the guides cut down (good time for positive-type stem seals) and replace the retainers. This will typically give you .525" lift capability. Third is press-in rocker studs. If you go over .480" lift or so, have them replaced with screw-in.

Also, you need to use a Vortec-specific intake manifold. Don't even consider "redrilled" parts. The ports are relocated with Vortecs, and using anything but a proper intake is silly.

There are other aftermarket choices that don't have those limitations, but it's pretty much up to you which route you want to take.

I think the Holley 750DP blew him out of the water emissions wise. Vortecs would be better performance wise than the old camel humps. As stated above, Vortec have their limitations. A Pro Topline or World Sportsman may be a better choice.
