Can I cut this belt with impunity?

Alright, I have a 87 z28 with the TPI 305 and the A4 tranny. To make a long story short my AC compressor has been dead since, oh I dont know, maybe from the showroom floor. So I want to know if I can ditch the v-belt that spins it, cause the thing no longer spins. I figure that this is an unneccesary drain on HP output, even if its only like 1 or 2, still... So what do you think, to cut or not to cut. Thanks guys.

My car did that very thing for me a couple nights ago! Mine works though and I have to now replace it!

You are right that it would only be a couple HP, but if you want to get rid of the A/C, dump the compressor, and all the other A/C components you can and go for the weight loss theory! I think the rule of thumb is .1 sec in the 1/4 mile for every 100 lbs. dropped.

Working on:
'84 Z28 LG4 305 with 200,000 original miles!
Added dual elec fans.
145 MPH IROC Speedo
Building 430 HP 350 (ZZ430)
using primarily GMPP parts.
Short block sitting on a stand.

Starting to look like the Kicker poster child!

That only works if you have very sharp impunity. Otherwise, use a razor blade or something more conventional.

But seriously... yes, you can cut it. If you really don't want A/C on your car, you could even take all the stuff off.

Very sharp impunity, LOL RB! Seriously though thanks for the info. I would love to pull all of the AC stuff, think I read somewhere where a member, either on this board or another, pulled the AC and weighed it at about 47 lbs. (Don't quote me though 'cause its been awhile since I've read that post. ) But alas, it is not to be... Cars with AC in them, even when they dont work, retain a higher resale value, and my car will soon be for sale. (Already put a "holding payment" on a '91 z with the 350 and NO T-TOPS!, but thats another story.)

Thanks
