advancing the timing..need recomendations

say guys i was wondering what some the more experienced guys would recomend on timing advance.. i have a 350 withe the edelbrock tbi intake holley 650 tbi. hooker headers, hi flow cat and flos... i also have a jet stage 2 chip.. the timing is at 0 right know. only reason i know that is i had it checked when i was finished with the intake install. unfortenantly i cant afford a timing gun right now. so my guestion is what would be a good timing advance for this combo. oh yea i also have accel cap rotor and wires with an msd blaster coil...thanks ahead guys

Since you have an aftermarket off the shelf chip you need to keep it at zero. Any advance and the timing will come in to much and you will have bad knock. That chip, although garbage in itself, needs to run with your car with zero base timing.

i tried advancing the timing to where the tach changed about 300 rpm.. it seems to run stronger in the lower rpms than before... and why are those chips garbage as shifty would say...

The chips are very generic. One size fits all. Ive learned that there is a lot to gain with DIY. Not from experience yet, but simply reading tons of info on this board. I'm going to start dabbling here soon. Ive still got more to buy before I'm ready. Check out the DIY PROM section on this board.

Mark where it is.

Loosen the bolt.

Turn the distributor.

Do you like it better? (yes/no)

Yes: do it again.

No: put it back.

It's a car, it's not rocket science.
