Air Filter
Air Filter
Why is my air filter full of oil? I just changed itin september with a brand new one, and it is almost completly black. Are they supposed to go out that quick? Also, the bottom of the "pan" that has the air filter in it has all kinds of oil and sludge in it? What is that all about? That really sucks, maybe I don't have a leak, maybe all of my oil just goes into my cleaner!

84,
You are probably suffering from excessive blowby or a failed PCV valve. The piston rings leak combustion pressure past the pistons and into the crankcase. The crankcase becomes pressurized, and the oil vapors get forced back into the air cleaner through the PCV vent hose. The PCV normally keeps the crankcase in a slight vacuum, and the vent hose from the air cleaner is supposed to supply the air to the case. Your system is evidently running in "reverse" due to either worn rings or a failing PCV system/valve.

Ok, well, i knew that my rings were basically shot. I just put in a new pcv valve about two days ago. Do you think that may cutdown on the amount of oil? I plan on rebuilding this spring/summer, but is there anything to do to try and add a little better compression before then? Thanks
Run your PCV hose to manifold vacuum instead of your airfilter box. Then you will not be getting oil up there. If you have a lot of blowby you may want to run a filter on your PCV hose to slow the oil down a bit.

Judging from where you are, you're only a college boy and don't know better. That's okay i'm only in high school, and can perhaps teach a thing or two. The carburetor sits under the air filter housing. What the carburetor is sitting on the intake manifold. This is where the engine sucks in fuel and air. Now as ODB said :
There are several port thingys sticking up off of the intake manifold. One in the back, and 1 in the front. Each has 2 ports with 2 vacuum hoses. Tap into the one on the front, by hooking the hose up to the port. These hoses are for emissions purposes [read: does nothing]. Then you're oil will not be forcing into the air filter box and will keep the filter clean.
oh ya, Ohio U rocks!! hope i get in :nervous:

Ok, thanks alot. I'll try that. just so yu know, I do know what a carb, and a manifold is.
Do you mean the hose that is connected to my pcv valve or to the one that goes into the back of my airfilter?
Thanks alot.
Evan
