Need Help with Camshaft selection??
Looking for a camshaft for my 87 Trans Am 350 TPI. I have 1992 stock L98 iron heads that have been ported and polished and I'm planning on sticking with these heads for a while. I need some help on what I should be looking for in a cam I would like to get more power from it. The cam I'm using now is the compcam 08-300-8 duration I:206 E:210 and using 1.6 roller tip rockers lift I: .480 E: .510 Is this cam right for my combo or can I get a better cam. I was running this cam in the car when it was a stock 305 TPI. I'm considering the ZZ3,ZZ4,LT4 or LT4 Hotcam camshafts to use, which would work best with what I have? I've listed all the mod's that I will have on the car. I will have a chip programmed to the cam I end up using. 350 TPI, 5-spd manual tranny, Posi-rear with 3.73 gears,Edelbrock TPI intake ported, Ported Stock Plumen, Ported SLP runners, 52mm Edelbrock Throttle Body, 24# SVO injectors, Holley AFPR, Hooker Headers, Dyno-max cat-back exhaust, 160 T-Stat, 1.6 roller tip rockers, and stock L98 cast iron heads that have been ported,polished, larger springs, and screw-in studs.

I just got done putting the LT4 Hot Cam in my car and even though I haven't been able to test it yet, but your car is more modded than mine is, so it should run better than mine does. I bought mine from www.gmpartsdirect.com for $184 with shipping.

Dan87IROC-Z, What heads are you running with the LT4 Hot Cam? Ported or anything? How's the idel or any SES lights? The LT4 Hot cam is the one I want to run but not sure if it's too big for my set up. Did it make a big improvement in the performance. Thanks, Jason
You may have to get some better springs if you use the ZZ4 or LThot with 1.6RR. What size are the springs on your heads? Are they better than 305 Torquer S/R springs? Because I am considering these cams also, not the ZZ3 one though.
The heads are stock, no porting. There is no SES light and the idle is noticeable but not over bearing. But you should get brand new valve springs with any new cam you buy. Its a waste of time to put in a new cam and not put in new valve springs and new seals and clean up your valves and all that.

The springs I have are CompCams dual springs 987-16. I just have them installed on the heads back in October 2000 and put about 8,000 miles on the car since then so I think I'm alright on reusing the springs right? Or do I need to change springs again? The heads are back at the machine shop now I've been buring oil since I went from 305 TPI to 350 TPI back in October and they did the heads and installed the pistons and rings so there checking them out to see if something is not right.
