questions about smog and a/c
to start off i have an 82 2.8 carbed. i want to get rid of my a/c but i need heat. How do i get the ac box out and i can replace it with an a/c delte box right? Secondly i would like to remove the air pump and all the air fittings. am i going to get codes or have the car not run right meaning the computer (if there is one i'm not sure) telling it the wrong stuff? what do i need to do with the vacum lines going to the black plastic thing? do i need to plug the holes in the exhaust manifold and should i leave the o2 sensor? last thing, if i have a cat with an air tube fitting on it can i buy a cat with out one and use it? will that get me close to passing emmsions? i live in nj. thanks, Eric

There are screws on the front of the heater box (firewall) and underneath the passenger-side dashboard. You'll see the screws inside easily; there's a little flap that is cut into the sound dampening material. I think there are four screws under the dash, and maybe another four on the firewall. A few are studs, in which case you'll need a very small socket on the tip... you'll see what I mean. The AC-delete heater box should bolt right up.
Your car needs to pass emissions? Check your local laws, but the emissions inspection program not only requires the car to pass the smog test, it must also have all factory emissions components installed, too. If that's not a problem, then read on.
The header fittings, smog pump, and various hoses can be removed. Be sure to plug the bosses in the headers. Any small vacuum lines can be plugged, but I don't think that any vac lines run to the smog pump or solenoids. If you're referring to the inch-diameter rubber hoses, those can be removed. Just disconnect the line going to the cat and plug it up; there's really no need for a new cat. Leave the O2 sensor, it's necessary.
I don't really know if you'll encounter any problems with the computer, but I doubt it. I just pulled my smog setup, so we'll see what happens.
