Steering wheel problem again.

okay It strait Came off in My hands today, Soo I tore it all down heading the post I had made serveral weeks ( months ? ) ago.

Vader supplied to following pic, but I cant quite seem to get there.

the problem is, I cant get the last peice off to get to this point.

There are Two very strange fasteners Holding it On, Im sure anyone who has taken it apart knows what Im talking about. Its like a Stud with a thread in the middle, and I cant figure out how to get them out.

I tried Cutting a Slot In one with my dremel, and sticking a screwdriver In it, but that Dosent seem to be working.

Thanks For any suggestions, I really need to get this car Back on the Road.

They make a tool (don't have the number in front of me) that screws into the threads in the middle and you tighten a nut to act as a puller against the housing.

These pins are pressed in and rotating them won't pull them out.

I have removed these by finding a small screw that will screw into the threads and use a pair of wire cutters as leverage against the outer housing.

They just have to be pushed back in with a hammer on re-installation.

Make sure you pull the tilt spring out before you pull the pins.

Okay, Thanks guys.

I Got The part Number And have to Wait till Modany to call snap On and See about oRdering one.

I tried using a Stainless Machine screw and pulling it out, But it just wasnt strong enouhg.

So it looks like tuesday at least If I can get Overnight.

My Question Is, Would I be better off just getting a Junkyard Colum, providing it can get it for cheaper than the tool ?

Or is this something Im likely tto use again ? ( Im inlcined to belive I am )

Thanks again guys, I really appriciate it.

Buy the tool.

You know if you don't buy it, you will for sure need it again.

Beside, it a good excuse to buy a new tool

I have a MAC kit in a nice little box that has all the tools and pullers to do anything to a column. Its so nice to just grab one box, sit in front of the column, and work away.

I use a 8-32 machine screw and a pair of small vise grips, works great. Problem is, the tension of the spring that tilts the wheel up is against it, so you have to kind of pivot the whole works downward against the spring to take the force off the pin, Then it just sllides right out. Also if you don't do that, and just yank the pin as it sits, stuff will fly off and hit you in the face.

How much did that MAC kit cost? It seems like it might be worth it considering I use the steering wheel as a handle to get in and out of the car and it's coming loose again.

Thanks

Mike89GTA : I don't even know, I've got this disease, I just jump on the tool trucks and buy stuff....its uncontrolable, you just grab it, yell out "put it on the tab" and jump off the truck.

I have to be quick, the longer I'm on the truck, the more I spend.

I'll get the part number for you on Monday.

I can't check the price because the MAC guy doesn't come around anymore.

The Colum is still In the car, but It could be out in Short order... Unless there are any more goofy fasteners ( haha )

I tried a 8/32 machine screw With vice grips, and I Broke it off, I then tried it with a Stainless screw and broke it off.

Thats interesting about The angle tho RB, Ill have to play with it Tomarrow some.

Thanks For all the Help guys, Really appriciate it

And Engineboy, hopefully we can meet Up, Would be neat to meet a fellow 3rdgenner anyhow, specially one as prestigous as you P)

Bort,

I think I posted this before, but just in case...

RB is on the right track, but I've had a few "tight ones" that resisted that method, too. The "tight ones" always resist. But I digress...

Install a new screw in the pin - a long one with full thread. Before you do, install a nut on the machine screw first, then install the screw/nut through a flat washer and a ½" 12-point socket, with the 12-point side of the socket toward the pin. You may actually have to use a stack of washers that prevents the nut from falling through the square drive hole in the socket. Snug up the screw by hand, then use a small wrench to turn the nut and jack the pin out of the recess. As long as the screw is pulled straight outward, it shouldn't break. There are two or three stake marks holding the pin in place, so once you get it moved past that point it should come out relatively easily.

HINT: Remove the tilt mechanism balance spring first. That way there will be minimal tension on the pins when you remove them.

I've done a few of these with good success and no other special tools. Then again, I'm a cheap/lazy bastard.

For anyone interested, the part # for the tilt pin puller is PPR1000. (MAC Tools)

A complete kit for steering wheels and tilt/telescopic column dis-assembly is Pt# SWP700M. (MAC)

Yeah, I think thats prolly a good idea...

You should have seen the Rigged *** job I did soildering all that stuff back together, It was a little tight so I just crimped it all together with vice grips, When I threw it all in the car, The brakelights didnt work. Turns out however that it was a fuse I had blown taking it apart hot

Just need to Connect the Colum to the box now, Peace )

EDIT : Oh yeah, That bright switch cam was a bitch, So I just left it out ) Encouragement for Ram Air now...
