Timing questions

I had to take the distributer out of my 91 z28, and now i got the timing out of whack. I borrowed a timing light, but i remember i need to disconnect a sensor or wire when i time it. What wire do i disconnect? Can i advance the timing more than manufacturer recommended 6 degrees?
i will be running 93 octane only.
thanx

The should get you through it..and yes you can set the timing higher than the factory 6 degrees..start with a 2 degree increase to 8
