Regarding 1992 Air Induction Baffles.. REMOVE??

While surfing the net I came across a site that said these plastic hoods over the air box in the 3rd gen camaro only have 2 purposes.

1. QUIET the air rushing in
2. REDUCE HP so it didn't look to have close HP to that of their Corvette car.

Is this true?

What would happen if you removed them (held by screws I hear)? How much if ANY HP will be achieved? Any change in sound? (I have an open Fiberglass hood and can EASILY hear the air sucking through the cowl from inside the car when you floor it. Will removing them cause any damage or risk water/dirt into the engine?

I have a book that says you should take them out to benefit from more air. Mine will be getting removed when my K&Ns arrive shortly

Take them out.

they don't raise hp much when removed.. on a stock engine you'd be lucky to see a 1/4 of a hp increase. The reason for them was to quiet the incoming air charge for drive by noise levels. I removed mine a while ago, and can't notice the sound difference they were made to get rid of.. but then i'm always driving my car so I don't know what it sounds like on a drive by.

I believe that they are very effective in keeping water out. When I first got my K&N's I took mine out and after the first real rainstorm I pulled the filters and they were pretty wet (not their oil either). I put mine back in and I didn't notice a real difference anyway.

And some of us have gone even further and hacksawed the bottom of the air boxes out to completely elimate any hope that that part was ever going to be a restriction. I doubt it's worth any HP on a stock car, but do all the free mods you can, after all, they are free.
Just remove them. Unless you drive into a lake (in which case you'd have worse problems to worry about, eh?) water is not going to make it into the engine through there. In fact, i don't see how they could possibly get wet at all (unless lake driving), directly below the airboxes is ducting that goes from the fog light holes to the radiator, so even if somehow water splsed up, they couldn't get wet through the fog light holes, and water couldn't splash from the ground up to them because the aforementioned ducts are in the way.
