de winterizing question..

just wondering .. every year I change the oil /filter with some fresh mobil 1. and do all the other winterizing things.. someone told me that I should change the oil/filter AGAIN before taking it out.. is this really necessary? I change the oil and put it away now I have to throw that oil out and put fresh again?

I don't .. I change it before I put it away.. and change it again when I need to.. never had a problem.. I think the proper timetable for regular oil is once a year or at every oil chage mileage point. 3000 miles I think.... 5000 KM's for me anyways.

That's also what I do. The new synthetic sits in the sump all winter long, then gets put through the normal cycle on start-up. I generally only go 3K miles between changes, however, even on the Mobil 1. The daily drivers are being stretched to about 4k miles since they're now seeing a lot more highway mileage, and more frequent operation at full temperature.

The only experience I've had to test my theory is a tear-down of an LT1 at 110K miles, and there was virtually no wear. I expect you'd have no worse results if you ran your storage oil through a normal cycle. It's been sitting in there for months, but hasn't been subjected to the "normal" routine of exposure to combustion gasses, temperature swigs, aspiration of moisture through the crankcase, and other harmful events.

I vote you just start it, warm it, and run it.
