Advice Needed
Advice Needed
Hey everyone, I need advice on what to do performance wise on my 1992 Camaro RS 25th Anni. I have the type E engine which is the 305 TBI. No real performance mods yet, other than a K&N set up, and full dynomax exhaust if that counts. I was considering punching out the block to 350 but I have heard that will make my engine which already has thin stock cylinder walls weaker. I was originally considering a full engine rebuild and going from there and adding performance mods, IS IT WORTH IT? I am definately adding headers, and I wanted to convert to a 4 barrel carb (any brands recommended?) ... I also need suggestions on which clutch is a good choice as I think I want to replace mine as well. Is a speed chip a good idea on this car, if so what kind? Any suggestions on what to do to raise the performance and not spend too much would be appreciated. Has anyone done anything performance wise to a similar car with a type E engine set up? Drop me a line and let me know of any suggestions/tips you have.
Thanks Guys!
Dave.

Well...
First Thing, You cant "Punch" Out your Block to 350 Without creating a Steam engine.
Secondly, If I were you I would Chill for a while, Read this Board, and get to Know Your car a little bit, And Decide What YOU want to Do. Its easy to spend Money On Your car, Its harder to Spend it In the right places.
You can get as many opinions as there are people On this Board about what is the Best thing to Do, And the only One that matters Is yours. ( And Maybe Vaders, Rb83, GMtech, Engineboy... The list goes on, But I digress )
The easiest and Cheapest Thing to Do, IMO would be to Swap in a Carbed 350. Have 3 grand ? Get a ZZ4 crate engine, Drop it in, and Go racing ( till stuff starts breaking )
There are a few questions You need to Ask yourself.
Do You want this to be a Daily Driver? Or is this a Trailer Queen Wannabe ? Do You have to Pass emissions ? What are you Willing to sacrafice For Performance ?
And Last, But Deifnately Not least, How Fast can you afford To go ?
And there are about what, 6415 people On this board Who think it is worth it. Is it worth It to you ?
The TBI 305 is worth a few Minor Mods, If You want to get serious, Its not going to get you there however.

Welcome to the board.
It depends on what you want and how fast you want to get there.
The best bet is switch to a 350, even just a mild one is a great improvement. As Bort stated, you can't get there with a 305.
Any motor of any size will appreciate a good set of heads, intake, and ex. (sounds like you have that covered)
As stated, it depends on what you want to do with it. You can make it go as fast as your pocket will let you.
Some people on this board mod the V6s, others love the 305s, and the rest of us like to go fast.....
(just kidding, no flames please
)
The first thing is to figure out what you want out if it in the future, this way you only buy stuff once, and as you buy stuff, each component works well with the others.

Witchy,
I agree with the swap in a 350 idea.......but I'll go ya one better.
If you're like most guys, this is your daily driver and that's it. you're not loaded with spare cash, and do not have the luxury of parking the '92 for 6 months while it's being transformed into a street-hummer.
I NEVER thought I'd say this but here goes.....
Nitrous that wench. 125 HP shot. Your cast-piston engine will live with it, but make DAMNED SURE you follow the instructions on fuel enrichment. Good fuel pump, proper jets, etc.
I've just seen so many guys last year at the track running otherwise stock 305 cars into the 13's reliably that I can no longer deny the importance of nitrous as a power adder.
Also, and this is big......it does not take a highly-experienced engine builder to do it.
A nice, slow, double-check-everything weekend and $500 turns your 305 into a C-4 Corvette killer. And you only use the spray at the track, the other 29 days of the month you have a stock car with great mileage and dependability.
It's awfully hard to argue with. Good luck.
