Intermittant No Start

Occassionaly my motor would get hot, and I let my car sit, it wouldn't start. If I turned the key nothing happens. What I would do is hook I jumper wire from the battery to the solenoid wire, and with the key in the RUN position the motor would start right up. The last couple times the car wouldn't start, the motor was cold, and when I tried starting it with the jumper wire, the motor would start, run for not even half a second, then die. If I waited a few hours it would start right back up with just the key. What could be causing this?

JWS,

I'd start looking at the fusible links, the ignition switch, and the wiring around the switch and starter.

What year is your car? (Does it have VATS?)

I have a 89 IROC with a 5.7L TPI and VATS. After reading an article on how VATS works, I realize it has to have something to do with the ignition switch/VATS system. Next time it happens, I'll check to see if the VATS light is on, and I'll try waiting 4 minutes each time before I try to start it again.
