Msd stands for multiple spark discharge. That fires many sparks per firing at low engine temps. That is supposed to help fuel milage during cruise conditions.
A normal system also gets weaker spark as rpm's increase due to the shorter dwell times. The boxes increase the dwell time to produce a hotter spark at the higher rpm range.
