Bad Fuel Pump?
Alright guys, I have a 91 l98 that wont start. I first thought my tranny was going because when I would drive in any gear my RPM's would fluctuate up and down as I accelerated. Then I went to start the car today and there was a weird noise from the rear. Normally if my car doesn't start I hear the pump, now when I went to start it I heard the pump but the sound quietly died. I went to turn the key again and nothing. The weird thing about this is that I had the fuel pump replaced about a year and a half ago. Need help quick. Thanks.

If you want to check your fuel pump, Apply 12 volts(+) to pin "G" of the ALDL AND ground to pin "A" of the ALDL. This supplies power to the fuel pump for diagnostic purposes. You might also want to check out the fuel pump relay. When you turn the key, the fuel pump will run for about 2 - 4 seconds to prime the fuel system and then stop and start again when the car starts. If you just turned the key off without trying to start the car, the pump will not run when you turn the key the second time without out a short interval between key turns. BTW, did the sound you heard seem like a gurgle or maybe a grinding sound.

Did the fuel gauge move to the full position at the same time the pump died? If so I would first check the connections for teh pmp ground. If teh ground rots out breaks etc the pump quits working and teh gague moves to the full position.
It seems odd that a 1 year old pump would fail so soon. CHeck teh easy stuff before going throuh the hassle of removing teh tank to get at teh pump......
