Engine code 51?????????????

Hey guys I'm kinda stumped. I checked for codes cause my check engine light came on, and i got a code 51. Now i know it for a prom or ecm related problem. My question i read that after you clear the prom the car may run rough for a little bit(40 miles or so). I parked the car for the winter and have been getting ready for summer the last couple of weeks. So could the fact that it hasn't been driven cause this? or does the prom just die alll of a sudden like that?

The only thing I can think of is that your battery isn't giving the PROM enough power or that you disconnected it when you parked for the winter. If the PROM isn't getting enough power it could be scrambling the memory (tables).
I'd say just make sure the battery is fully charged up, drive it around a little, then reset the PROM. The reason it's a little rough when you first reset it is because the PROM 'learns' what type of fuel you are using and a bunch of other stuff. Then it rewrites the fuel map.

MEMCAL or ECM failure. The MEMCAL supplies the ECM with information concerning the exact vehicle and engine combination, including "limp home" data.
And yes, things like this do happen. if you can, swap your ecm with a known good one and see what happens. let us know

hey guys thanks for the replies. I took her for a good run, and after it warmed up the light was gone, and it was running great.I reset the prom again, took it for a little run and the code was clear. Oh ya it was the only code showing at the time.
One other annoying tidbit. What causes that ratteling noise on the AC compresser??I noticed it for the first time when the car was warming up.????????
