LT1 Gaskets
Hey guys im just going to replace some gaskets on my LT1 before throwing her in, which are the most important gaskets i should replace, which one tend to wear on LT1s? i really need some help thanks
Gaskets don't wear, since they don't move. Some erode, other get damaged by improper installation. LT1s are really basically no different than any other SBC, just more refined in some areas, deficient in others. The factory gaskets don't normally leak.
However, if you have an LT1 out of the vehicle, and you haven't done anything to it but run it, I'd suggest you at least remove the balancer, water pump, and OptiSpark distributor to inspect or change the cap and rotor before you drop it between some fenders. when you do, a new water pump/timing cover seal is imperative. Failure of the timing cover seal and/or water pump drive seal will destroy your Opti in a few miles. Since spark plug wires can be a PITA to replace in the vehicle, it may also be a good time to replace or at least remove, test, clean, and inspect yours.
Another thing to watch for on LT1s is the exhaust mainfolds. The cast manifolds tend to crack and leak, making an annoying "ticking" noise. Removing them and inspecting them before engine installation would be a good idea.
Another good/bad point about the LT1 is the oil cooler. The oil coolers are great, but the oil cooler lines tend to leak at the compression fittings for the hoses. Replace them now if they show signs of drips or seepage.
Other than that, there's nothing special that you should do that wouldn't be done to any other replacement engine. Freeze plugs, flywheel bolts, new fluids, etc.
