My First camero
My First camero
hey all , as you can see I'm new to the board and to the camero world , I'm glad to be apart the camero world now I just can't wait to be able to drive it .
the car is a 82 Z28 (LG4) I think I got a good price on it , ($500 bones)
there's some surface rust , as well as a little rust on the rear quarters , all the glass and t-tops are there with no cracks
so far the drive train looks good , but I will find out more once I get the smaller things done to it .
my wife and I were playing around with it trying to get it started , (the car had sat for about a year maybe longer) once we gave it boast with our truck it started right
away but it was blowing smoke of the light blue kind , now does this mean that the carb needs adjustment or the rings are shot ? or that the car sat for that long and might just smoke for a bit ,as we didn't leave it run very long , the gauge says E so I didn't want to chance it .
if it's rings what kind of rings should i get , just GM replacment ones ?
since I have been a long term owner of a toyota 4x4 it's been a good 10 years or so since I worked on a demestic car.
thx

Welcome to the world of third gen's! I, myself have an 82 Camaro, not the LG4, but still an 82. My caprice has an LG4, though.
The problem you describe is actually quite a common one. While there is the chance that it is the rings that are going bad, i have a stronger feeling that the valve guide seals are going bad and oil is leaking into the combustion chamber. Actually my caprice has this problem.
If you perform a search, you will get many articles on replacing the valve seals. I have replaced mine a few times. A cheap tool of ebay and a days worth of work and some cheap little parts can make the smoke go away. Or at the very least, narrow down the problem. Be forwarned, a magnet is a priceless tool to have when replacing the seals. Those little valve locks can be buggers when they pop off.
Oh and when your car starts bogging out at higher RPMs, dont get the urge to replace the qjet (assuming its still the stock setup). Its probably not the cause. You'll understand that part later

I would let the car run for a bit. It could very well be the valve seals if it has set for a year alot of oil could have leaked into the combustion chamber and be burning. But the white or light blue smoke will be oil and not the carb needing to be tuned. No if it is the valve seals then it should only burn oil after sitting. What it does is when it sits even if its just a couple of hours then oil slowly leaks into the chambers and burns on next start up. I replaced min about a year and a half ago not too hard, a days work i replaced my manifold at the same time even though you dont have to touch it.

i would look at the seals first. i would actually replace them if the car has been sitting fairly long and considering its an 82. new seals arent very expensive and you can try to install them your self. you will need a valve spring compressor though. how many miles are on this car?

let it run for a while and make sure it gets up to operating temp. i have a friend that has a car that smokes on start up all the time. and its blue. we know the seals are gone but its a junker car and it usually goes away once the car warms up.
