Burning oil......

Here's the deal (89 formula 350):
idling i smell oil burning
i burn about 1quart of oil every 750-1000 miles
smoke on startup.

Is this just from worn valve seals?

i think thats the cause of all this, I just want to double check with people who arent newbies like me

Most likely. "Hardened" would be a better word than "worn". Was on my 123k 305 - same symptoms.

Could be rings, too, though.

If you are burning oil at idle check out your oil return journals located at the front and back of your head. To do this just pop off your valve covers and take a look for sludge build up. The holes are pretty small, about a 1/2 inch in diameter if that. You may need to clean everything out/off before you see them.

This is the situation I had when I purchased my bird. The car would smoke really bad the longer it sat at idle, like in a drive through line at Taco Bell. The guy I bought it from thought the rings were bad so I got it for a steal.

What happens is all that $hit blocks the oil from circulating back to the pan. It pools up on top of the head and the only place for it to go is down the valve. Hence, smoke.

What I did was take a hand gun cleaning kit with the wire bristle end used for the barrel and "honed" the journals clean. It works!
