is my diagnosis OK?

lately I drove my ta over a thousand miles in two long trips over the past week and I noticed that I seem to be leaking oil from somewhere because most of the undercariage has a nice coating of it (well no one said mobil one was BAD at inhibiting rust HA).
so I figure that this sucks and start looking for the source.

well the oil pan seal seems to be the culprit on both sides because the inside of the flywheel cover is pretty dry (ie not rear main-whew!) and the oil stains are all low on the engine.
BUT

then i notice that there is also oil coming from the head gaskets on both sides and this could possibly be leaking down to the oil pan seals.
the final straw is that lately I seem to be loosing coolant but I havent found a leak!!!
I am fearful that I have some blown head gaskets and this is my question---

would this leak of oil go along with my theory that my head gaskets are toast and leaking in all kinds of places or what???

sorry about the book

thanks
james

88,

Are you certain the oil is from the heads and not leaking from the rocker covers, then running down the heads?

If the heads have a trail of oil from them, the only thing I could envision is a leak at the drainback holes from the rocker area to the crankcase. If this were the case, a coolant leak would also be very likely, and a compression leak wouldn't be too far behind. The only real fix for that is to replace the head gaskets. Maybe this is the excuse you needed to install those World heads.

How much oil are you losing? If the amount is slight, finding the leak could be more difficult.

Another possibility is that you are getting some blowby and pressurizing the crankcase, forcing oil out seals and gasketed joints. While this would probably be more evident at the seals and PCV vent system than at the head gaskets, anything is possible.

If you suspect a head gasket, I would suggest a cylinder leakage test or compression test. You should also have the cooling system pressure tested. If you have leakage from both of these tests and can't see the leaks externally, it might be head gasket time.

Good luck.

well everything you point to says head gasket:

1. yes it IS coming from cylynder head seals
2. no oil from valve cover seals OR pcv or breather holes

I will have a comp. test and coolant compression test done soon but vader ...
thanx, as always you come through quickly.
