350... which is better?
350... which is better?
ok, here's the thing... In '87 the came out with the 5.7L L98, Correct? and they used that 350 up until 92. They also had another 350 before '87 which I think was the L69. Don't burn me on this, I'm not to sure. Either way what I'm wondering is, is there much difference between the two? Reason being, I was going to do some mods to my car but I totalled up how much it would cost... and before I am done I'm paying for the car again. So it's gonna be cheaper to sell my RS and but around an 87-88 Irocz with the 5.7l. Then do mods from there.
Info on which ones are better would be great... as well as, how many miles do you think go by on the 350 b4 you need a rebuild?

depends greatly on how fast you want to go in the end.
If you do extensive mods then it really doesn't matter so much what you start with.
If you want to go minimal mods, then I'd say get the 1992 version 350.
IMO

Slay,
I'm not certain about Canadian models, but US general production models didn't have the option of a 350 until 1987. That engine was the L98. The LT1 replaced that in late 1993.
If you want a ThirdGen, the L98 is your choice for a 350. The 1990-1992 models are simpler due to the speed-density control scheme, but also somewhat less "modification-friendly" for the same reason. The 1987-1989 models have a mass air sensor which compensates for a lot of modifaction more easily. The base engine specifications and cam profiles are essentially the same for all of those years, with a few minor exceptions.
Before you choose, you might want to read the tech articles and find some of the differences across the years. You might not want to get stuck with the pre-1988 rear disc brake calipers, but you might want a Borg axle and MAS instead of a Saginaw rear end and S-D control system. Or, if you're lucky you can find a used-but-nice 1LE car for a bargain, and have all the goodies that go with it. Find out what was available, and that may narrow your search.
