Putting Distributor Back In -- Got a ?

Pulled the distributor to get at a plug in the block for the alternate oil pressure sending unit hole. Go to put the distributor back in and the only way it will go back in is with the rotor one terminal off of the origional setting (marked a spot on the firewall and another on the plenum to line it up).

Here's the ? Can I just move the spark plug wire boots over one terminal ie: new 1 to old 8, new 8 to old 4, etc.

Thanks for the help,

Sparks a flyin'

To do it properly, look down the distributor hole. You'll see a slot. use a big flat screwdriver and turn it just a bit. The distributor should slip right in.

If you marked it while the distributor was fully seated, it will appear to be one back as it is pulled out/put back in because of the gear at the bottom.

You probably didn't notice it turning backwards as you pulled it out, but it did. Turn it back beyond your mark on the firewall, and slip it back in. If it doesn't go down all the way, it's just not quite lined up with the oil pump drive (the "slot" to which CBernard refers).

ok as cberbnarn explned but with this twist,.. bring the engine up to top dead center 0 on the compression stroke but dont crank it!!!!! then as he said do the screwdriver thing and see if you can get it back to the right terminal!!!just keep moving the oil pump shaft untill the dis. drops back in right!!! thats the correct way to do it !!!
