what does this mean?????

I was driving down the beltway about 80mph and my speedo needle started jumping to zero and 80 and in between. after i got off of the beltway and came to a red light, i pulled off and it worked fine again. I changed over form a 115mph gauge cluster to a 145mph from an IROC. i have been driving at these speeds before and had no problem with them. thanks for any input.

CK,

Just guessing, but the speedo cable might be fraying or sticking in the outer housing. If you remove the inner cable to inspect for fraying, clean it and apply some graphite lube before replacing it.

Installing the new speedo head might have moved the cable slightly and caused a new bend or kink that the cable doesn't like.

if it is run by a cable, then it sounds like it may be getting ready to break. If it is dry inside the housing then it will bind and fray like Vader says. It will not last long doing that though.
