Ignition in 89 RS

Im working on a friends ignition in an 89 RS.When you go to start it it won't start unless you wiggle the key. I put a new lock cylinder in and still no change. When it does start sometimes it'll shut back off when you put it in the run position.Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

When you say it won't start unless you wiggle the key, you mean the key turns but it just doesn't crank right??

If so, try adjusting the ignition switch on the bottom of the column.

Does it work better when the tilt wheel is all the way up or down?? (if it has tilt)

It has tilt and it doesn't matter what position it is in. I can put it in the start position and let up just a little then put it in full start again and it starts but sometimes when you put it back in thr run position it will die. I think it is the switch but I don't know how to adjust it.

The switch is mounted on the top of the column and is accuated by a rod that comes from they key cylinder.

This is adjusted with a 5/16 and a 11/32 wrench down on the column.

If you look under the dash, kind of by the brake pedal on the column, you will see it.

Just loosen the bolts and it sounds like you need to move it towards the drivers seat.

I forgot, you usually have to remove the high beam switch that is mounted on top of the ignition switch first, no big deal, don't even unplug it, just unbolt and move it out of the way.

Make sure the rod for the high beams goes back into the slot on the switch.

This will leave one bolt in the ignition switch. (they share one mounting bolt)

Good luck.
