my "no-start" gremlin is back - I need some help!
Damn! I thought I had this problem licked - I guess about 6 months was better than nothing... Anyways, now once again my car up and decides not to start. It is an intermittent problem and pain in my butt. If I go somewhere, it starts up fine. I get ready to go somewhere else, and it does nothing. I have power to everything, but the starter does not engage. I don't know if I have power to crank going to the starter cuz I can't check it alone. When I got stranded today, I probably waited about 5 minutes and it started right up, just like nothing was wrong. WTF? I don't know if there's a problem in the ignition, or the solenoid, or what. Last time this was happening, I cleaned all terminals to the starter and battery and hadn't had a problem since - up until today... Any ideas? I'm listening, cuz I ain't got a clue anymore... HELP!!!

Thunder,
A hot starter solenoid can exhibit those symptoms. Allowing the starter to leach heat from the block and exhuast can heat the solenoid and open any small cracks or poor connections, thereby preventing cranking.

Thanks, Vader... I was kinda going for the solenoid, hoping that will be it. It always does it after the car has been running, never from a cold start. I think what I'm going to do is put a remote solenoid unit on it. The starter that is on it right now had to have the solenoid removed, and reinstalled after the starter was in place (last time I put a starter on). That was fun, let me tell ya... Last time I had these symptoms, I took the time to verify other gremlins like the nuetral start, VATS, etc. and everything seemed in order. It may have just re-occured today, since the weather is nice and warm and the temp probably contributed to it...

Some problems I had:
Loose ground to battery- I would pop the hood and when I closed it again (because I couldn't figure out what was wrong) it would wiggle the cable enough so it could start.
Dead alternator - Would start a few times, but one day it died. It ws a new battery too, just the fact that I was driving for so long with no alt, it finally ran out of juice. It can slowly recharge if it sits a while, but there comes a time...
Hot start- installed heat shield, but only keeps heat away from headers, not the block itself. If again, I may have gotten a blanket.
Hot start- routed carb fuel line away from eengine block and got a new carb. This may not be the best fix, but it made me happy to get rid of the ccQ-jet!
