Motor buildup feedback

Hey everyone, I just wanted some opinions on my motor buildup. I'm starting off with a ZZ4 shortblock. I'm getting a killer deal on some Brodix Track 1 heads & Intake Manifold so I'm gonna use those. I'm gonna get the heads angle milled down to 58cc to get a 10:1 compression ratio. For the valvetrain I'm undecided on a cam yet but everything will be from CompCams as I'm getting a killer deal on all of their parts also. Any info & feedback on my buildup would be great good or bad. I'm fairly new at this & just want everyones opinions. The intended purpose of this motor will be for weekend cruises or weekend racing. Motor will be carbed, running a built up 700R4 & hopefully a 9" rear.

Hmm, the regular ZZ4 cam w/ 1.5 ratio rockers (stock) is usually used with the Aluminum L98 heads with 58cc chambers puts you around the 350-375hp mark. The ZZ430 uses the fastburn heads with 62cc chambers and the LT4 Hot Cam kit w/ 1.6 ratio rockers to make 430hp. I dont know how those Brodix heads flow in comparison to the fastburn heads, but I imagine with the LT4 Hot Cam kit you would be in the 400hp range, especially with little higher compression around 10:1 instead of 9.6:1. But I dont know if the LT4 Hot cam kit would be a good match for your stall setup. Since you want to go with CompCams stuff, give their tech line a call. They'll know which cam matches up best with your engine combo and stall converter. I called their tech line not too long ago and those guys are very helpfull (much better help than CraneCams techs). Looks like with the right cam you will be pushing 400hp!!

Yeah, I'm shooting for a low to mid 400hp mark. I know all the info you mentioned about all the GM setups but I am getting such a killer deal on the Brodix & CompCams stuff that I can't pass it up! I'm gonna make it work!

what plans? you've talked a lot and not said very much other than price is more important to you than a well thougth out matched combo.

Where did he say that? He said he wants to know peoples opinions on the buildup hes doing. So far he's decided to go with a ZZ4 shortblock, Brodix Track 1 heads & Intake Manifold, and a Carb, though I guess undecided on which carb. Those are his plans so far and I'm sure he wants opinions on what other mods people think he should do for his combo.

I'll post later when I get a valvetrain setup decided. Guess I'm being to vague on all the details. I've been talking with guys at Brodix & CompCams for info so I can get everything all matched up for what I wanna do. I've got everything written down while researching a lot of different combos & haven't mentioned them yet. BTW thanks CrazyHawaiian. No probs. I'll let you guys know what my final setup will be later. And for the record, I'm not just slapping whatever I can get on without thought of if it's gonna work or not. I've been researching for this buildup for a while now & got too excited when posting. I don't like when I'm misunderstood so just wanted to make that clear.

i like to start out with a budget then exceed it by at least 100%. set some goals or applications. then pick a cam and work outward from the cam.

I hear you about the budget lol! I also understand your point about working from the cam out. Thanks for your tip.

The Track 1 is a performance head. It would be beyond pointlessly stoooopid to run those with some mild stock cam like the LT4 HOT cam.

http://www.brodix.com/onlinecatalog/...page11-12.html

Those heads are good for power somewhere in the 500-550 HP range, depending on what you use around them.

I'd suggest a solid roller, something like about a XR286S, with 1.6 rockers; some kind of single plane intake, such as the one Brodix makes to go with them, or a Dart one, or a Vic Jr.; and all the exhaust you can jam on it.

Oh don't worry, I wasn't even thinking of running that cam with these heads lol. Still debating between a solid roller or a hydraulic roller. I've got a few suggestions from talking to some CompCams guys & I'll let you all know how this "money pit" project turns out.

If you have to get a whole valve train anyway, the solid roller is the way to go.

How much money is in your budget / how much do you plan to spend?

cash/HP=?
