maf placement

I was told that the maf sensor should be close to the thottle body.My question is does it have to be close or can it be by the air filter.btw87 GTA 350 tpi

As long as it is recieving ALL of the air flowing into the engine, it should be fine.

What he said. As long as the MAF measures ALL intake air, and the ductwork between the MAF and the TB doesn't store enough air to run the engine for more than a few seconds, you should notice no difference.

If the ductwork is excessively long and/or has resonators and air boxes that cazn store large volumes of air, you might have unacceptable hesitation on throttle tip-in (more than the typical TPI D/m/t hesitation).
