hypothetical question about gear ratios
Would it be less stressful, while flooring it, on a drivetrain if you have higher gears, say 3.73's as opposed to 2.73's. I was just thinking that it would be easier for everything to get moving since the gears are taller. I was just curious about this and was wondering if anyone knew.
I believe it's more stressful if you have 2:73 gears since it would harder to get the car moving... not as much "mechanical leverage" would be one way to put it.

Blade has it right, as far as the "torque loading" on the trans and driveshaft goes. On the other hand, with the higher gear, the RPMs would always be higher; so that part of the loading on things, like bearing and U-joint wear, would be higher. Plus, with the higher-ratio gears, the torque delivered to the axles would be higher by the ratio of the ratios to each other (¿huh?), which means the stress on them would be higher.
All in all, in my experience, the overall reliability is about the same, it just moves the failure point around.

thats how i look at it. because say you take off in a higher gear well with a manual many times the clutch will just slip till the car gets rolling.
