HELP! Code 51 and won't start

Just looking to see if you guys think I should be looking for a new ECM, PROM or Mem-cal?

It's a 91 Z28 305 TPI, 'bout a month ago, I was driving on the highway, and the car just died like it was running out of gas. Have been fixing a lot of things since that (new distributor, fuel pump, coil, etc.) and finally learned how to pull the codes. Came up with code 51 (bad ECM, PROM or mem-cal. The car will not start, but everything else functions as should. So, whata ya think?

Define "wont start." Will it crank and crank and crank, but never catch? Will the starter not engage period? Need some details.

perhaps you blew the ECM fuse. I think that also doubles over as the fuel pump fuse. I dont know if that would throw a code though. heck if that blew, im not sure it would throw a code at all?

Code 51 is indeed for a faulty or in-correct Mem-Cal. It could be bad or it could have just come loose. Drop the ECM down and remove the cover and try to re-seat the Mem-Cal pack. If that does not fix the problem, a new one at the dealership is about $80.00. BTW Stekman, blowing that fuse will not throw a code 51 or any other code.

Stek,

You're probably running the fuel pump through the oil presure switch.

91Z,

When you reseat the MEMCAL, do it twice. Remove the MEMCAL and make sure the PROM itself is fully seated in the cartridge. Reinstall the MEMCAL in the ECM and reseat it carefully. It's also a good time to make a note of the PROM ID, found on the foil label. While you're there, remove the ECM connectors and reseat them a couple of times. The wiping action of the contacts can help clean the foil traces on the ECM for better connection. A bad connection, low battery voltage, or poor grounding at the ECM can set the "51".
