Vortec head on 350

Okay here's the scoop, I bought my car last year the previous owner had removed the 2.8 and installed a 305, 305 was on it's last legges when I bought it and died the following day, the owner told me this when I bought the car and offered me a 350 that he had. I bought this from him aswell, he said to take vortec heads off of the 305 and put them on the 350 but the intake manifold from the 305 would not fit, anybody know if this is true? I have had several people tell me that they should fit, also will the exaust manifolds fit this aswell?

The 305 came from a caprice cop car and the 350 came from a 70's pick up truck.

Didnt exactly understand your post, but no, a standard SBC intake will not be able to fit the vortec heads. The ports on the vortec heads are raised a bit to give a more direct path for the air/fuel to follow. This raised port location is the first big reason. the second is that the SBC intake is a 12 bolt mounting pattern. the vortec is only 8. And no, the sbc cannot be modded to fit the vortec.

Vortec exhaust is still standard mounting pattern. At least i think thats the questions you were after.

Allow me to clarify, *I wrote that and was very tired, and didn't feel like going back to read it over*

The 305 with is in my car now Has Vortec Heads, and intake manifold it worked fine, until the engine died.
Seen here

So anyway since this 350 that I will be putting in is out of a 70's truck the guy told me to take the vortec stuff off of the 305 and put it on the 350, BUT! he told me that the intake manifold would not fit on the 350 for some reason. I have had numerous people tell me otherwise. Either way the 350 is going in the car next week.

It sounds like there's some miscommunication taking place, about what fits what.
If you take the heads and intake off the 305, those heads and intake ought to bolt onto the 350 block without any problems.

It will fit. Whether or not it is desirable, that is yet to be determined. There were such things as 305 vortec heads that shouldnt be on a 350 engine. When RB inquired about the casting numbers i think that is what he was after, though i am not sure. If you peek under the valve covers, around the springs, you will see an 8 digit number that will be one of 4 things: 12558059, 12552520, 10239906, or 12558062. The first 2 casting numbers, the "059" and "520" versions are 305 heads. While they may be ok on a 305 engine, they really arent suited for a 350. Obviously they CAN be used, but they wont be as productive as a 350 vortec head. The 350 version of the vortec includes the "906" and the "062" version of the vortec heads. But other than that, yes, if the head/intake combo fits on the 305, it will be ok on the 350.
