Car will not start

I have an 86 IROC with the LG4 T-5 stock, I bought it in November. I bought a new choke therm. and was on my way to a friends to put it on and my car cut off. I thought it was out of gas. I got gas in it and it started, but kept cutting off. It finaly made it and we replaced the choke. Now it want start. Over the last two days I have started it twice only to cut off after a couple of seconds. It cranks strong but will not fire. It is getting fuel because I busted the fuel line replacing the fuel filter and it was spraying out. I replaced the broken part with a fuel hose. The dist. cap, plug wires and plugs were replaced right after I got the car. I repalced the coil today. It just will not fire up. What do I need to check, I'm not very mechanical.

This type of no-start condition is usually caused by one of two things: lack of either spark or fuel. First check to see that you're getting a decent spark. You can do this by pulling off a plug wire and put a screwdriver in the end of it. Hold it close to a good ground while someone cranks the engine. If you have spark, then the problem is probably fuel related. First check to see that fuel is coming out of the carb. Take off the air cleaner and see that fuel sprays into the carb when you step on the accellerator. But remember that just because you're getting fuel doesn't mean that you're getting the right amount of fuel. From what you said, my guess is that the choke isn't working correctly. If the choke is wide open and it's cold out, the engine will run for about one second, if that. So watch what the choke is doing when you try to start the car. It should be closed.
